ive aquired a fragile little flower

dudes capable enough and picks things up pretty quick long as you go softly softly when teaching him

but he goes full on frightened rabbit soon as theres pressure or he has responsibility...... and im pretty sure he’ll cry if anyone actually gets pissed off at him

ive been shielding him from the higher pressure jobbies/more volatile co workers so far... but i think thats a mistake...

still.. i dont want to throw him under the bus...

never worked with someone this thin skinned n nervy before.... dude makes me nervous just being around him

(hes also incapable of giving a yes or no answer.... wich might actually make me get pissed off at him sooner or later.... its a yes or no question... not an invite for a 20 minute chat fuuuuuuuuuuuck....)

anyhoo... im guessing the advice will be to stop shielding him and see if he makes it.... but i still had to ask

It’s like teaching somebody to swim in shark infested waters. You can either just throw them straight in, and they’ll probably get eaten by a shark. Or you can start them off in a bathtub, then move them to a kiddie pool, and so on up the line with progressive difficulty . But they’ll probably eventually get eaten by a shark anyways .

Thus, the answer here is to do whatever requires the least amount of effort on your part.

Well you are more patient than me. I’ll help folks out as much as I can but I’m not shielding them from other people or situations.

I’ve found that you should stop shielding the person, but be strategic about it and intro duce challenges individually and in increasing difficulty. It still may not work, but you might as well give them the best chance at success. You may need to even present it as, “This may be uncomfortable, but consider it a stretch goal to meet this challenge.”

But if these are essential job functions it does no good to avoid having the person learn to deal with them or recognize that the job is not a good fit.

Some folks just never learned how to make a confident decision, others are just not capable. I had a trainee a few years ago - smart, sharp, proactive guy, but had problems pulling the trigger. My line of work is basically entirely making dozens of big decisions with large monetary consequences everyday. I worked with him for about 4 months. He has since moved on to our marketing department where he doesn’t have to make many decisions anymore....

sounds fair

tbh... he’d be a good fit in pre production... no surprises there just learn yer jobbies and go go go

but he keeps volunteering himself for other shit he can do (like programming) and then imploding under the pressure

(ive no doubt he can do the job btw... he just cant handle pressure)

this guy seems like that i guess

i think he’d fit perfect in pre assembly... building the parts

but he has higher aims.... and keeps buckling under the pressure

Throw him to the sharks. It’s not worth the hassle of trying to baby the guy, he will forever be a problem to deal with. I’ve had to deal with people like that for way too long and they will never learn to accept any kind of criticism or handle pressure. I could literally write a book bi tching about an awful coworker that I’ve been stuck with for ten years now. Whenever he’s on vacation or “sick” plant morale goes through the roof.

Regarding the 20 minute answer: I had a guy that I finally had to tell him “When I ask you what time it is, don’t tell me how to build a watch. Just tell me what time it is.” Nobody could turn a 30 minute meeting into an hour meeting like this guy. We called him the “time bandit” because he was always stealing your time.

I’ve taught kids to stop telling stories when I need a short answer, but I’ve never managed to get a kid who is that timid to handle pressure. Especially once people are past that mental maturity barrier of the early 20s  I’m not sure that’s fixable without the resources of a mental health professional.

When my wife was an architect intern, the architect she worked for would hover over her and say, “draw faster... draw faster... we needs these drawings done, so I need you to draw faster!”

Nothing like a little time in the crucible to refine the metal.

I can sympathize with the guy a bit, I tend to take criticisms a bit too personally and when I started I didn’t like giving a straight answer until I did the work to make sure it’s feasible.

But that being said, I’m pretty effective under pressure, and I’m pretty good at pivoting a bad design into something functional, and I’m getting far more confident in my abilities now that I’m 6 years into this job.

So, my guess is that he just needs to build his confidence in the job.  Problem is, I don’t know how to help with that other than letting him do the job and helping out without judgement on occasion.

thats pretty much what im doing (well maybe not without judgement...but i keep that stuff in my head)

we’re pretty short staffed for the time being and he’s pretty good when not under pressure... so he might just squeek by

Best of luck to him, hopefully he finds his groove or niche.  Though  maybe he’ll be happier in a different position.
